Many things have changed over the course of the pandemic and the office environment has been no exception. This includes businesses that never operated with remote employees before going fully virtual with team members spanning the globe, to hybrid work environments (more on that later), to businesses that have remained fully in the office.
Many business owners are still trying to figure out what works best. Since every business is different, there is no magic bullet solution. However, what we’ve been seeing a lot over the past 6-8 months is a combination, or hybrid, of the work-from-home and in-person work environments.
There is great flexibility for most people working from home, yet there is nothing that can replace face-to-face meetings. While there are many different technologies to keep up with communication and productivity in a virtual work environment, many businesses have noticed that their team culture, a vital part of their business, has lacked in a virtual setting. In addition, there may be those on a team that don’t have a home environment suitable for work or would simply rather work in a more collaborative, in-person setting to help them learn and grow in their career. On the other side, there has been a welcome change for many who worked in a more rigid environment pre-pandemic that required them to constantly be at their desk, in the office, with allocated/timed breaks. Life doesn’t happen according to a clock, and appointments, kid schedules, and many other daily life occurrences are not always conducive to a “9-5” job.
As most businesses were forced to employ some type of virtual environment during lockdowns, they quickly realized that they were able to operate virtually, at least to an extent. With positives and negatives for both at-home and in-person work environments, this leaves room for a hybrid environment built-to-suit for your respective business. There are many challenges with this model as well but adopting a hybrid approach helped some businesses that were divided on which path to take and afforded them with some of the best aspects of both.
One of the challenges that arises with a hybrid model is office space with a non-traditional use pattern. There are solutions to this.
Co-working spaces and incubators are options for businesses, employees and entrepreneurs to take the space that suits their needs. They typically offer access to amenities like having a business mailing address, bookable boardroom & meeting rooms, access to a kitchen, collaborative or maker space, and flexible desk space that still gives individuals the energy of a larger office space by sharing it with others. While these amenities are similar in both co-working spaces and incubators the similarities tend to end there.
Co-working spaces are typically more attractive to all types of entrepreneurs. There may be solo-entrepreneurs, consultants, freelancers, employees of a company that is not located in the area, lifestyle businesses, etc. all working in the same space. Many co-working spaces also offer some additional services, beyond typical amenities, like networking events & business opportunities for their members. It can be a great place for those who don’t want to commit to a full office, or that don’t have the need to, while still offering the amenities of a large office.
Incubators are different. Incubators are traditionally for startups (early-stage tech companies), however, there are now incubators in many other sectors from food to fashion. The constant factor is that incubators are used to drive innovation in the specific industries they’re designed. Much of the value is driven from the on-site industry expertise, support, and company collaborations.

- Blockchain is Global. It is not limited by geography. It can send and resolve transactions from Canada to Kenya without the involvement of intermediaries. Unlike fiat currency at a bank, these transactions can be conducted in seconds between the parties involved.
- Blockchain is Borderless. There is no need to define what region, what bank, or type of fiat currency to transact in.
- Blockchain is secure. It is identified by your own personal set of “keys.” If properly stored and protected, no one can ever know or access the funds in your personal wallet or transact without your permission.
- Blockchain is transparent. Everything is time-stamped, recorded and visible for all to see (minus their identity). There is no need to talk about banks, delays and having intermediaries involved in a transaction. Blockchain is a trustless system and is irrefutable.
There is no industry, company, or person in the world that would argue that these tenants could not or will not correct a flawed-centric system.
We will start seeing real, true growth if we are responsible and diligent.
Web3 / blockchain is the new and subsequent iteration of what we have evolved to accommodate. We didn’t trust initially trust debit cards, google searches etc., but the time to adopt blockchain and apply it to our given industry is here, and we would all be remiss not to at least reflect on the application of the four core tenants.

What role does art play in technology? Why is it important to consider art when innovating?

Even if you are one of the rare people who just LOVES spreadsheets, I will bet that you still use elements of art, like colour and line weight, to communicate your ideas more clearly and broadly. Art is the most universal language we have and it can enhance a person's ability to connect with abstract or hard to understand technological concepts and products. How our human senses take in and interact with the sights, sounds and feel of the technology can strongly influence our response to the technology itself. And the marriage of good art and good technology can make the difference between whether the technology is readily adopted or actively avoided.

My industry is Interactive Digital Media (IDM) and, at its core, IDM is a fusion of art and technology. Whether it’s a video game, an educational app or convention floor kiosk, consumers engage their senses and make interactive choices through the creative sights, sounds and feel presented to them through the technology. This interaction could look like touching a button on your phone or turning your head to inspect an object in a fantasy world, rendered in virtual reality all around you.

Well-crafted IDM can create powerful experiences that positively impact consumers. IDM has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to tell memorable stories, sell products and educate, which is why many companies are starting to invest in interactive digital media advertising.

Unless you have been living under a rock the past few months, you are probably starting to get curious as to how the ‘Metaverse’ will affect your life. These days, it is everywhere, from news headlines to startup decks. The only place you can’t find it is in reality. That is because the Metaverse still has a few years to grow and develop before it becomes what many promise it to be - a decentralized evolution of the internet where anyone has open access to socialize, be entertained and learn through 3D content.
This idea for the future Metaverse has tons of potential. Still, like anything ground-breaking, it also brings many potential negatives. Many organizations including ours weigh these pros and cons every day to help ensure the future Metaverse is more positive than negative. There are hundreds of pros and cons, so here, we narrow it down to three main categories: social, entertainment and education.
Social
Like today’s internet, the Metaverse will allow you to meet people from all over the world. The difference is that in the Metaverse, you will be standing right beside people while travelling to digital representations of their country or even into digital representations of their personality. You will even be able to create digital representations of your personality. Whether that be through the clothes your avatar wears, a decorated room where friends can hang out or even a whole world filled with adventures from your favourite movies, novels and dreams. The best part is that it will be completely anonymous, allowing anyone who can’t express themselves in the real world to express themselves in the Metaverse.
Now, this all sounds great, but there are some possible negatives. Firstly just like today, where people can bully others on social media, the same will be true for the Metaverse but may take place at larger extremes. Secondly, anonymity is fantastic, but every day we hear of tech companies getting hacked and leaking personal data or, worse yet, selling data. Similar problems may occur in the Metaverse and could genuinely hurt those who rely on anonymity. Lastly, worldwide communities are incredible for connection. Still, they can also mean people end up in an echo chamber of negativity or possibly even destructive thought. We have seen examples of this in current social media communities, but the Metaverse will only amplify it.
Entertainment
Whether you’re interested in Star Wars, Harry Potter, gardening or some obscure interest, you can find a community around any topic on the internet today. Through that community today, you can read, watch or create an almost unlimited amount of content. In the future, instead of just creating content for others to consume, you will be able to place yourself and others directly inside the content.
The cons here are that there are no rules on the entertainment or creativity in the Metaverse. If someone wants to create something hateful or twist the truth through advanced deepfake technology, this will all be possible. So if this is the future, what privacy laws will need to be in place to ensure a random person can’t take your likeness or a world leader’s likeness and use it in any way they want?
Education
Education today is centralized and has strict standards that everyone must follow. This is good as it ensures that you can trust a doctor is properly trained to help when you go to a hospital. But at the same time, it limits the number of people who can afford to pay for education and the number of methods a teacher can employ to teach a student. Most importantly, it limits people’s options for exploring new career paths or passions. Over the past few years, platforms like YouTube and Masterclass have made it much easier for people to explore new passions while decreasing costs and giving teachers more freedom. The Metaverse will build upon this success by providing teachers with interactive learning materials.
The worry is that as large corporations gain a stronger hold in the education space, these standards will diminish or disappear entirely. This control may lead to underskilled individuals or less accessibility to different groups worldwide.
How can you benefit?
The Metaverse of the future will have opportunities galore, many of which we can’t even imagine today. So, how can you benefit today? First off, many Metaverse projects need the same help every regular business needs today. So, whether you build websites, run marketing campaigns or manage communities, Metaverse businesses need your help. As a consumer business, there are many platforms for you to showcase your wares in the Metaverse. Done well, this allows your customers to experience your products and hopefully convince them to purchase. Internally you could look to create interactive training materials for employees or meet with them in Metaverse platforms to better interact remotely. Lastly, if you want to help drive the future of the Metaverse, you could join groups that are setting standards and promoting innovation.
In conclusion, the exciting Metaverse will be here soon. Like every technology evolution, there will be good and bad. So, today is the time for society to stand up and ensure proper standards are agreed upon so that the Metaverse of the future doesn’t reflect the ugly parts of the internet today.
