The Ontario government has directed Metrolinx to significantly enhance GO train services across southern Ontario. On January 9, 2025, Premier Doug Ford and Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria issued a letter to Metrolinx chair Donald Wright, urging the agency to develop "GO 2.0," a plan aimed at converting existing freight rail lines into passenger routes within the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.

A key component of this proposal involves expanding services on the Kitchener and Milton lines. This would be achieved by constructing a freight rail bypass along the Highway 407 corridor, connecting the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) main line near Trafalgar Road in Milton to the Canadian National (CN) bypass line at Bramalea.

The concept of enhancing GO Transit services, particularly the Milton line—which serves several Mississauga stations en route to Toronto—has been under consideration for some time. In February 2024, the province expressed support for implementing two-way, all-day service along this route. Additionally, nearly four years prior, the federal government committed to funding 50% of the estimated $1-billion Milton GO improvement plan, awaiting provincial collaboration to advance the project.

The proposed GO 2.0 initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance regional transit infrastructure, aiming to improve connectivity and meet the growing transportation needs of southern Ontario's residents.
