Q&A with Bethlehem Housing: Supporting the Community through Soup Fest

Bethlehem Housing has long been a vital support system in the Niagara region, offering housing and services to those in need. With their new fall event, the Country Harvest Soup Fest, they’ve created another way to engage the community while continuing their mission. In this exclusive Q&A, Bethlehem Housing shares how the event came to be and the impact they’re making in Niagara.

Reveal Magazine: Could you share with us how Soup Fest began?

Bethlehem Housing: Our Annual Empty Bowls event has grown into a big, gala-like celebration, and with tickets selling out quickly, we knew there were still so many supporters eager to attend. That’s why we created a mini, Fall Harvest-inspired event—a perfect, lunchtime gathering that lets even more people enjoy the fun, for a great cause of course!

Reveal Magazine: How many people or families does Bethlehem Housing support in Niagara?

Bethlehem Housing: We currently have 306 households living in our transitional and permanent supportive housing buildings. Additionally, we support 110 households through our community outreach program.

Reveal Magazine: What immediate support would have the greatest impact on your project?

Bethlehem Housing: Our greatest need is funding for the vital programs and support services we offer to our tenants and the broader community through our outreach efforts. These resources are essential in helping us continue making a lasting impact.

Reveal Magazine: Can you share a success story from your program?

Bethlehem Housing: There are several impactful stories, but let’s talk about Cathy’s Story.

Cathy’s life took a heart-wrenching turn when her marriage ended, triggering mental health challenges. She found herself caring for two young children without the security of a stable home. After struggling to afford rent, she faced the difficult reality of becoming homeless.

“I used to judge people I’d see on the side of the street,” Cathy admits. “There’s such a stigma surrounding not being able to organize your own shelter.”

Cathy and her daughters lived in a hotel room for two months before they got the call to move into Transitional Housing at Bethlehem Place. Though the adjustment was difficult, she says, “We received incredible support—from Community Support Workers to the EarlyON Centre. They helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Today, Cathy has moved into her own affordable 2-bedroom apartment in one of Bethlehem’s permanent community housing buildings. “I worked all my life, and to admit I couldn’t provide a home for my daughters was horrendous. We need more affordable housing. All people like me want is a front door to close behind them—a safe haven, a home.”

Reveal Magazine: Your work is clearly making a difference. How can people support Bethlehem Housing’s mission?

Bethlehem Housing: The best way to support us is by donating to our programs or attending events like the Soup Fest. Every contribution helps us provide housing and services that change lives, like Cathy’s.
